About Matchbox Motin Productions Ltd

Our Story – From Kent Creatives to a Leading Video Production Company in the South East.

Our Story

At Matchbox Motion, we’re a close-knit team of filmmakers, producers, and creatives with a shared passion for telling real stories through powerful video production. Based in Wateringbury near Maidstone, Kent, we work with businesses, brands, artists, and individuals across the UK and internationally, delivering professional videography, animation, and live event filming services tailored to every client.

Founded in 2016 by Matthew Bolton and Lee Bethell, Matchbox Motion began as a small creative partnership built around a simple goal: to make meaningful, high-quality video content that connects with audiences. What started as two freelancers with a shared vision has grown into one of Kent’s leading video production companies, trusted by clients across a wide range of industries and sectors.

The idea for Matchbox Motion first came about while Matt and Lee were collaborating on a shoot with Raw Hair Salon. That day sparked the realisation that it was time to take things seriously and build something bigger - a company focused on the kind of creative projects they wanted to produce, and a way to make a living doing what they loved.

The business began humbly in Matt’s parents’ utility room, which was converted into a tiny office. For the next three years, the pair worked from that small space, slowly building up enough turnover to support themselves full time. As their equipment collection and client base grew, so did their ambitions. Eventually, they moved into a purpose-built garden cabin - a small but significant upgrade that allowed them to scale up, store more gear, and even bring in freelance editors when needed.

Then came the lockdown years. Like many creative businesses, Matchbox Motion had to adapt quickly. Working separately from their respective homes made collaboration tricky, but it also opened the door to new opportunities. During this time, Matt and Lee focused on developing new skills, taking live streaming to a professional level and pushing their animation services much further. The effort paid off - despite the challenges, the company managed to double its turnover, something both remain incredibly proud and grateful for.

It was also during this period that Tom Webzell joined the team. After reaching out to gain experience in video production, Tom quickly became an important part of the crew and continues to work with Matchbox Motion today as a key camera operator and lead wedding videographer.

In 2023, the team expanded again with the addition of Rob Curd, a talented photographer and videographer who first crossed paths with Matchbox Motion a few years earlier through a local agency. Rob quickly became a close friend of the business, and now collaborates with the team almost weekly, working together on a wide mix of video and photography projects across the UK.

By early 2023, it was clear that the time had come for a bigger step forward. In March 2023, Matchbox Motion moved into a new, much larger office at The Old Stables in Wateringbury - a peaceful village just outside Maidstone. The new space gave the team room to expand, collaborate properly again, and continue developing their growing client base both in the UK and abroad.

Although Matt and Lee remain the core of the business, Matchbox Motion has developed into a wider creative network - a tight-knit group of talented collaborators, freelancers, and friends of the company who help bring larger productions to life. From multi-camera shoots and live event coverage to complex post-production projects, the extended crew share the same commitment to creativity, reliability, and quality that defines everything we do.

A special mention goes to long-term friend of the business Sean Carr, who now lives in Norfolk but still joins us from time to time on selected projects, including trips to Chicago, New York, and Amsterdam for some of the yearly conferences we film.

We’ve also recently welcomed Jake Stillwell, introduced to us by Tom, who often works alongside him on weddings and commercial shoots. Jake has fitted in perfectly with the team, and we’re looking forward to helping him continue developing his skills and experience.

We’ve also had the pleasure of collaborating with many other talented creatives over the years, including Tom Richards, a frequent early collaborator who now specialises in children’s school portrait photography, but who remains a great friend of the business. Other valued contributors have included Jacob Concanon, Mark Bass, Terry Beckley, Daniel Brooker, Luca Bianchet, and many others who’ve supported us on shoots, live streams, edits, and as camera operators.

Each of these individuals has played a part in shaping what Matchbox Motion is today - a company built on collaboration, trust, and the shared goal of producing great work with great people.

We believe great video comes from collaboration, trust, and a genuine love of the craft, and we bring that spirit to every project we take on. Whether it’s a corporate video, an international event, or a story told close to home, our aim is always to create something authentic, engaging, and memorable.

Since we began in 2016, Matchbox Motion has evolved to offer:

  • Corporate video production

  • Animation and motion graphics

  • Product videos and photography

  • Live event filming

  • Social content and explainer videos

  • Case study videos and mini documentaries

  • And much more

All editing and post-production is handled in our dedicated office suite, while filming takes place on location or in hired studios across the UK. As we continue to grow, our focus remains the same as it was on day one - producing creative, meaningful video that helps people and brands share their stories in the most engaging way possible.
